How To Study Your Bible
Step 1 - Word of God
Try to keep what you read between 10-20 verses.
Step 2 - Observation
Try to simplify each verse to its main idea until you get a concise statement or fact. It may be helpful to summarize the verse by removing words from it. Try to use the same words that are in your Bible. Do not summarize it in your own words! If you get “stuck,” ask yourself: What is the main subject? Where is all of this taking place? When is the author trying to communicate?
Step 3 - Reflection
Now, for each simplified verse, look for a spiritual “truth.” It might be helpful to start each “truth” with “As Christians, we should be...” Ask yourself: What does this verse teach us about who God is? Is there a promise God makes? Is there a warning we need to remember? What are the people doing that we should or shouldn't be doing? Is there a command we need to obey? Is there an example we need to follow? How have you been challenged to honor God through this verse?
Step 4 - What do I do?
What one “truth” has challenged you most? Why will your life be any different because of what you have read? What is it God wants you to focus on? You can do this by telling yourself, “I will try to today.”
Step 5 - Discuss (Pray)
Take a few minutes and talk to God. Ask Him to help you live out the “truth” revealed today. Be honest and personal. Ask God to put your focus on Him. Finally, ask God for an opportunity to discuss what you have learned with someone sharing your journey through the Word..
